Here is the most likely scenario that has caused your dilemma, and once knowing this, will help you avoid this particular pitfall.
1. You open an excel attachment from an existing email.
2. You find the information interesting, and want forward it on to another user, you hit the windows button, and choose 'send as email'
3. You then compose your email, and just prior to hitting send, you think to yourself "hmm, better check those numbers one more time"
4. You open the attachment in the now NEW email....
5. Outlook seizes up, and will not free itself until Excel is shutdown via the task manager (never a good way to close a document).
To avoid this situation, IT has ALWAYS said it is best practice to not work on an attachment out of an email, take it out of the email first, and then open it up outside of the email. When you open an attachment in Outlook, it temporarily exists in a hidden temporary folder that is difficult to find, changes to the attachment are NOT guarantied to stay changed due to the nature of this temporary folder. The folder can and will delete it's contents periodically, so items saved to it are volatile, and cannot be counted on as a 'safe' location for files.
Do yourself a favor and follow best practices. Copy and paste the file out of the email and into a safe location, then open the file from that safe location to avoid headaches. Please add your questions or concerns in the comments section of this post!
